Training - Confined Space Entry

Why the training?

Workplace fatality statistics:

Australian-based health and safety consultant, Achievable Solutions, has recently issued some sobering statistics about workplace fatalities in Australia, New Zealand and the rest of the world that emphasise the need for all of us to be more proactive about safety in our workplaces.

The current and up-to-date (documented) fatality count for the year 2009, as at 30 September is:

  • Australia - 49
  • New Zealand - 30
  • Rest of world - 1339
  • Total - 1418

These statistics break down to the following mortality rates:

  • 5.54 deaths per day;
  • 38.32 deaths per week; or
  • 202.57 deaths per month.

The total represents an increase in mortality rates of 27.29 per month over same period last year

"Many workers are injured and/or killed each year while working in confined spaces. An estimated 60% of the fatalities have been among the would-be rescuers. A confined space can be more hazardous than regular workspaces for many reasons." Workplace Health and Safety legislation requires that “Employers and Employees all” have a shared responsibility to ensure workers health and safety while at work.
